Watchdog Urges Hungary to Respect Rights of Refugees in Detention Centers

According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), those expecting registration and processing in the facilities “are being held in abysmal conditions,” as footage from inside the camp obtained by the watchdog has revealed.
“The detainees at Roszke are held in filthy, overcrowded conditions, hungry, and lacking medical care,” Peter Bouckaert, the emergency director at the organization, said as quoted in the statement.

He added that Hungarian authorities assisted by other EU governments and the United Nations must ensure that migrants and refugees "are held in humane conditions and that their rights are respected.”

Hungary is being used as a gateway to wealthier EU countries by an enormous influx of hundreds of thousands of refugees.

Budapest estimates that some 172,000 refugees and migrants have entered the country since the beginning of 2015.
