UN says ongoing water crisis in northeastern Syria affecting five million persons – Syrian Arab News Agency

water crisis in northeastern Syria

The ongoing water crisis in the northeastern Syria is affecting nearly five million persons, the Spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General Stéphane Dujarric said in a briefing on Sunday.

The citizens in the northeastern Syria could not have access to enough safe water due to low water level, disruption of water networks, which impacts the operation of its stations, Dujarric said.

“The sever drinking water shortage and the spread of polluted or unsafe water led to a rise in outbreaks of water borne-diseases and limited the possibility of confronting the Corona pandemic,’ he added.

The UN had released a plan to be implemented over the next six months targeting nearly three million persons who are the most affected by water crisis in the aforementioned areas, he noted.

The United Nations has identified the needs to address the water crisis in the north and the northeastern Syria at 251 million dollars, of which only 51 million has been received.
